Patient Transport Services

NHS Patient Services and Who Pays?

NHS England currently has responsibility for commissioning some neonatal and paediatric transport services as prescribed specialised services.

The NHS also has responsibility for commissioning transport services where patients need to be transported from children's inpatient mental health services and secure mental hospitals.

This is not the same as Emergency Ambulances which are subject to different arrangements (see paragraph 17) from the link provided here:

NHS England long-read link under 'Who Pays'

Please refer to:

11.20 - Non-emergency Patient Transport Services (PTS) are defined as non-urgent, planned transportation of patients with a medical need for transport to and from premises providing NHS healthcare, and/or between providers of NHS-funded healthcare.

11.21 - Integrated Care Boards (ICBs) are responsible for commissioning non-emergency PTS, including where patients require transportation to or from services commissioned by NHS England, and the responsible ICB for PTS is determined in the normal fashion, using the general rule at paragraph 10.2.

If you are having difficulties with PTS you can refer the above link and information to your GP where they will find the relevant detail for your specific situation.
